Info: MBO began as a Munich office-machine business and grew into a major West German calculator and consumer-electronics brand. Its name stood for Münchner Büro Organisation. SCHMIDT Peter and NIEDERLEITNER Lorenz established the business in 1966. it was registered in July 1967 as MBO Schmidt & Niederleitner GmbH & Co. KG, based in Deisenhofen near Munich. Both founders came from office-machine sales. Early 1970s: Entry into electronic calculators. MBO initially imported General desktop calculators, then developed a broad range bearing its own name. A contemporary 1973 report recorded 30,000 calculator sales during the previous year—20,000 in Germany and 10,000 abroad—and ambitious expansion plans. Mid-to-late 1970s: Rapid growth through rebranding. MBO sold pocket, scientific and printing calculators sourced from different manufacturers. Identified suppliers include TOHO and UNITREX. This explains why MBO calculators often resemble machines sold under other brands, while looking quite different from one another. 1980s: An established mass-market brand. By 1980, MBO was reported as a German calculator market leader. Its range subsequently included thin LCD calculators, quartz watches, consumer electronics and electronic organizers. 1994–2004: Acquisition and decline. JENOPTIK acquired MBO in 1994. In 1998, MBO merged to form 4MBO International Electronic AG. Following insolvency in 2004, MEDION acquired its brand rights.
